Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

I got this oneOf Mice and Men from a friend who read it in high school.  She said I had to read it, it was one of her favorites.  So of course I read it, and I can’t believe it.  This is a short read, more of a novella or short story.  I read it in a day.  It was one of those where I was literally yelling at it out loud, I know I’m a dork, it’s fine.  But it was just one of those where I was so surprised I couldn’t believe it!

This is a story about friendship and in a twisted way, doing what is best for your friends; even if it may hurt both of you.  You will get a glimpse into what it was like in the 1930’s; jumping from job to job, not relying on anyone but yourself, and the hopelessness of wanting to own something for yourself but finding out it can never happen.  You’ll feel heartache, what true friendship means, and small glimpses of happiness.

So this is about two friends in the 1930’s who are going to a new job on a ranch.  One of the men is mentally stunted, we never find out if something happened to him or if he was just always like that.  His friend is his protector and they travel together and dream of someday owning land.  They go to this new job and immediately feel weird about the whole thing.  The ranch owners son gives them the creeps and his wife is always hanging around the working men.  They decide to stay though because they need the money to buy their own land.  The very end, last ten pages or so, is when you will be surprised though.

This one was a good one, it was a good one to start my classics journey on.  I never read many classics when I was little, even the ones in high school we were supposed to read.  So I’m brushing up on the classics!  Let me know if you have any favorite classics that I need to read in the comments, please!

  1. IIf you haven’t already read it, I would recommend “To kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. Legal drama that touches on many issues and set in small town America. Well worth the read and it will stay with you long after you finish it. A must read!
